Hard disk drive advantages and disadvantages

Under article we will discuss Hard disk drive advantages and disadvantages or pros and cons of a hard drive, types of hard disk, what is hard disk and also understand hard disk structure and working with a hard disk with diagram. How do HDD works? What hard disk store? And what is the size of the hard drive?

What is Hard disk drive? Or Hard disk definition and function

hard disk drive (HDD), or fixed disk is a data storage device, or it is also known electro-mechanical HDD. The hard disk drive that retrieves the digital information from the user and stores the data with the support of magnetic storage, help of one or more coated with magnetic material rotating disks. The disks combined with moving magnetic heads arm which read-write data on the surface of the Disk. The HDD comes in non-volatile storage category that means data remain to save in the hard drive when powered off. In future, the data can access or retrievable from fixed disk.

The hard disk drive (HDD) uses in the computers, laptops, main servers, data video recorder (DVR), Personal Video Recorder (PVR) like sky satellite box and also popular nowadays as a portable storage device. The Portable device or types of the external hard disk device is a box with a supportable laptop, or computer Hard drive and box contains one USB cable connector or firewire connection. With the support of USB cable, allow us to save our secure or protected data in external hard disk device forever. Nowadays, HDD is familiar among businessman, doctors, engineers, students and other users collecting personal data.

As minimum storage of HDD or hard disk storage capacity chart is available in a computer or Laptop is 160 GB, 250 GB, 500 GB, 750 GB. But due to high requirements of works are demanding the massive size of Hard disk drive storages. Currently, maximum internal and external Hard disk drive storages are available 16TB (terabytes). The hard disk drive advantages and disadvantages will discuss below.

How do hard drive work and storage data?

First, we need to discuss the different types of hard disk or hard drive types and differences. There are two general types of the hard disk (HDD), which use one or more rotating discs or platter and rely on magnetic storage, and the second type is solid-state drives (SSD), which have no moving mechanical parts, but it is renowned SSD flash memory or USB flash drive. In this article will discuss how a hard drive does work.

Let start to understand that what is inside the Hard disk with support of below-mentioned diagram of Hard drive internally.

1.   Platter

More than one Platter coated with magnetic material rotating discs, where the computer all information is saved in the surface of the rotating discs.

2.   Motor

As you can see the place of the Motor in the internal diagram that connected with Platter or discs that helps the platter to rotate with 5400 RPM or 7200 RPM according to system instructions.

3.   Read/Write Heads

The disks or platters combined with moving magnetic heads arm which read-write data on the surface of the disc.

4.   Actuator

The actuator is a component of a machine inside the HDD that is responsible for moving and controlling magnetic heads arm.

5.   Interface

The HDD interface helps to connect the drive with the computer motherboard. It can connect parallel-serial ATA (SATA) or (PATA) also called IDE or EIDE connector.

6. Jumper

The HDD jumper was used to configure the setting drive “0” and drive “1” was in IDE as master and slave. But nowadays it is not being used.

7.Power Supply

The highlighted port is showing in the diagram used for power supply.

HDD internal diagram

After complete understand the internal parts, now needs to discuss how HDD works. The HDD electro-mechanical drive that retrieves the digital information from the motherboard and stores the data with the support of magnetic storage, help of one or more coated with magnetic material rotating disks. The disks combined with moving magnetic heads arm which read and write data on the surface of the disc. The surface of the further disk area divided several parts. A disk drive track is a circular path on the surface of the disk on which information magnetically record and read. Each “track” divided subdivision of Track is called a sector. Each sector stores a fixed amount of user information, traditionally 512 bytes for HDD and 2048 bytes for DVD-ROM and CD ROM. But Nowadays due to advance technology HDD can store 4096-byte per sector.

To reduce the overhead of managing on-disk data structures, so a cluster or allocation unit is a unit of disk space allocation for files and directories. It is mean that big size file unable to save a single sector. It needs to manage the group of Sectors called clusters.

What Hard Disk stores?

The Hard Disk is a storage device that is used to store all types of data including music, pictures, videos, emails, documents and other downloaded file stores. It also contains all files of operating systems as well as all software files and is also used as hard disk audio recorder or hard disk video recorder.

What is the size of Hard Disk?

Hard drives come in two basic physical sizes, 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch. These sizes refer to the size of the data platters, not the size of the hard drive mechanism. Traditionally, 2.5-inch drives are used for laptops, while 3.5-inch drives used for desktop computers.

What are the benefits of backing up data to a local external disk?

Due to revolutionary changes in technology also changed the pattern of works from manual to digitalise and other millions of types of files created for personal or business use. The following essential data need to be protected and secure place where data unreachable and undeletable. Therefore local external disk is used to backing up relevant data. The External hard drive pros and cons or pro and cons of portable storage devices also discuss further.

Hard disk drive advantages and disadvantages or pros and cons of internal hard drives.

We have discussed what a hard disk drive is and how it is work. Now let discuss the hard disk drive advantages and disadvantages or HDD advantages and disadvantages Or magnetic storage advantages and disadvantages mentioned below.

1.   Storage Device Capacity

The storage device capacity is another advantage of Hard disk drive compare with a solid-State drive. HDD is more common and sells all market in the world. It is available 60 GB, 100 GB, 120 GB, 160 GB, 250 GB, 500 GB, 750 GB and maximum possible capacity of the Hard disk is 16 Terabytes or more according to repaid technology.

2.   The cost affordable

The second advantages of hard disk drives are cheaper compare with SSD driver. The hard disk per megabyte of storage is most inexpensive compare solid-state drive (SDD). But Solid-state drive storage capacity similar to an HDD can be twice as expensive. With affordable cost advantage of HDD make the laptops and desktop computer cheaper and easily accessible with a range of End-user.

3.   The Longer lifespan.

Durability in terms of the write-and-read cycle is another well-meaning advantage of HDD. The memory of the SSD drive used only for a limited number of writes. The State drive storage cannot write a single bit of data without first erasing. But the combination of platters and head make Hard disk drive unique with other Storages device of one time doing multiples task of reading and writing.

4.   Higher ReadWrite Cycles

Another hard disk drive advantage is durability based on higher read and writes cycles compare with SSD. The SSD drive has only a limited number of times the data store and retrieve because SDD memory has a limited number of write. But due to moveable arm head can manage the data read and write within the same time.

5.   Size of HDD

Another hard disk drive advantage that HDD is the available different size of the internal and external hard disk drive. The 3.5 inch HDD often used in a desktop computer, while 2.5 inch HDD used for laptop and both size portable internal and external drive. The size of the HDD does not affect the performance and capacity of storage. It reduced the portability and convenience of the internal and external hard drive.

6.   The HDD Speed

The hard disk drives another advantage to stores and retrieves data quite faster compare with the floppy disk, CD ROM and DVD ROM (optical storage).

7.   The Non-Volatile HDD

Another advantage of hard disk drive that it is non-volatile storage is a type of computer memory that information stored data can retrieve even after power off. It’s mean that storage data are not lost when you switch of the computer.

1.   HDD Higher Power Consumption

The main disadvantage of the hard drive is that it consumes extra power compare with SSD. It is because HDD needs more energy to rotate the platter and enable to move the arm of the magnetic head. The SSD takes less energy to store data.

2.   HDD Producing Heat

Another disadvantage of the hard drive is that internal moving parts create extra heat, due to the same issue slower the speed of performance and also slowly damages internal electronic components.

3.   HDD Produces Noise

Hard disk drive another disadvantage is that spinning platter and moving mechanical arm magnetical head creates noise during the operation. While the other hand, SDD does not have mechanical parts nor creates Noise during the process.

4.   The Access Time

The typical hard disk drive timing access is slower compare with SSD. The hard disk drive takes about 10000 microseconds access time to compare with SDD takes 5000 microseconds to access the data.

5.   The Larger Physical Form

The physical form of the hard disk is massive size compare with SDD. The size of the HDD cannot reduce it is because internal parts need attention to the placement and operation of its components. Therefore the physical restriction makes the Hard disk drive inappropriate. The instead of SDD is physical form smaller compare with HDD.

6.   The Reliability of HDD

The usage of long-time Hard disk drive, the internal magnetic platters parts and moveable arm” Head” wear down and fail while SDD more reliable compared with HDD. It is because the SDD drive does not have internal parts.

7.   The Slower Performance

The disadvantage of HDD is that the performance measured on basis read and write the speeds and depending on their RPM rotation per minutes. Currently, higher RPM speed increases the read and writes performance basis. But SDD does have read and write heads and RPM rotation. It means the SSD faster compare with HDD.
